Once a year London is transformed into a life-sized art exhibition for the Lumiere Festival of Light! Over a four day period, London’s public spaces become a nocturnal art exhibition reimagining London’s architecture.
A wonder to see, the festival will take place from the 18th – 21st of January throughout London, with key features including The Light of Spirit at Westminster & Victoria which is designed by artist Patrice Warrener. The artist plans to illuminate Westminster Abbey highlighting the architectural mastery of the building in glorious technicolour. Another top choice is the Umbrella Project which will appear at various Lumiere locations throughout the festival with members of the local community popping up with an array of luminous umbrellas in a choreographed move. What’s more, entry is free to all Lumiere Events, which is perfect if you are feeling a little low on funds after the Christmas frivolities!
Other Lumiere highlights include: Waterlicht Installation, Kings Cross | Cosmoscope, Fitzrovia | Voyage, West End | Supercube, West End | Impulse, Mayfair | Nightlife, West End |
Various Locations, London
An immersive experience like no other, fill your January with a fun at the ABBA Super Troupers Exhibition!
Super kitsch, you will be taken on a tour of the Southbank Centre exploring the music and lives of Swedish Pop Sensation ABBA. The magical tour will be narrated by Jarvis Cocker and will touch on cultural and political happenings of 1970s Britain. During the 70s Britain was hit by a time of financial crisis, a wave of strikes and a 3-day working week. For many ABBA was a much-needed burst of positivity, optimism, and excitement which makes it a particularly good fit to help solve those January blues!
Southbank Centre, Belvedere Rd, Lambeth, London SE1 8XX
Not in London? Other exhibitions to check out this month include: Transformation, Liverpool |Roy Lichtenstein, Liverpool | A Woman’s Place, Leeds | When We Were Young, Edinburgh | Coming Out, Birmingham.
A ‘pop-up’ restaurant experience in your own home, turn traditional dining into a fun activity that you and your friends can get involved with this January! A trend that is here to stay, we think that a Supper Club is a great way to test your culinary skills, meet new people and just do something a little bit out of the ordinary. So to help you create a Supper Club, we’ve come up with our Top 5 Tips…
1. Curate Your Guest List
A supper club is a brilliant way to meet new people and broaden your horizons. For the first supper club, we recommend inviting your friends and asking them to each bring a mystery guest. This will create a great mixture of people that you do and don’t know, avoiding any awkwardness or stiff small talk.
2. Choose a theme
Supper clubs work best when there is a theme. It can be anything from a creative workshop, a book club, a wine appreciation evening (our kind of evening!), a party game Supper Club or anything that suits your fancy. The wackier the better in our opinion!
3. Plan The Menu
An obvious, but vital aspect is to prepare a menu that is worthy of restaurant standards! You could use a theme, by region, for example, e.g. Italian, Mediterranean, Turkish etc or you could source locally grown food for a more seasonal offering. If you want to charge for your Supper Club then we recommend taking payment in advance to avoid any unwanted last-minute cancellations that could leave you out of pocket!
4. Presentation is key
WOW, your guests with a beautiful tablescape! Let’s face it the whole dining experience is enriched by food presentation and so you’ll need to devote some time to make the food look as good as it tastes. Our top recommendations include presenting your food on breadboards for a laid-back, rustic charm; contrasting the food colours with your crockery which will make your spread pop; or embellishing your dishes with herbs such coriander for mains and berries for pudding. If you are more social than a chef, check out our Food Presentation blog here
5. Don’t forget the playlist
To recreate that restaurant experience, don’t forget a great playlist. We’ve got a number of curated playlists on the Rockett St George Spotify account, but you can also create your own to suit your dinner party theme.
And most importantly… have fun! This is a chance to get together with old and new friends to enjoy good food together.
Celebrating the life of Scottish Poet, Robert Burns, Burns Night will be celebrated at the end of the month on January 25th. With ceilidhs danced, haggis consumed and whiskey drank – Burns Night is an evening of frivolities, dancing, fun, and madness. In our opinion, its the perfect January treat! Now if you are not fortunate enough to be in Scotland on January 25th then despair not! We have found a Burns Night Celebration that may be closer to home…
Not satisfied with just one night of celebrations, Scottish-themed bar – Mac & Wild
– will be hosting a whole week of Burns Night fun at their London based restaurants. Throughout the week you can treat yourself to a Whisky & Beer Pairing Experience, a Haggis Making Masterclass, a Whiskey Tasting Experience and a Whiskey & Chocolate Tasting Experience!
A shit load of fun, expect to have a wild time and on Burns Night itself, Mac & Wild will be hosting a Burns Supper with a delightful Scottish-themed menu including Mac & Wild Scotch Egg (Venison, Haggis, Black Pudding), Whisky Oats Trifle and Haggis, Neeps & Tatties! Disclaimer – it will be boozy, wild and probably a little bit messy so prepare for a big night out!
